GOD'S GIFTS WITHIN: Universal Virtues for 2002
Unity's "God's Gifts Within" program in 2002 will provide adults and youth of all ages core concepts and practices for life-long spiritual and principled expression of Gods magnificent gifts.
Each week throughout 2002, the entire Unity community will learn and re-learn 52 universal virtues drawn from the world's religions, one for each week of the year.
Our year-long virtue venture will help us all learn the common language of integrity and self-esteem, discover new ways to introduce sacred time and space into everyday life, and live by our highest spiritual values. We will share empowering ways to embrace God's gifts within.
The "God's Gifts Within" program integrates the study of the 52 universal virtues with our 5 basic Unity beliefs in an exciting process of growth and spiritual rediscovery. The curriculum for our Youth and Family Ministry for 2002 incorporates the same weekly virtue being introduced to adults in the Sunday Worship and Celebration
Service. In other words-we'll all be on the same page the entire year! Our weekly program will engage adults and children of all ages as we explore the virtue of the week through a lesson, scripture and daily affirmation.
WHAT ARE "VIRTUES?
"Virtues are the essence of the human spirit and the content of our character," says The Virtue Project. One of the most important responsibilities we have in our lives is to cultivate and express our virtues, which are the core of the human spirit and the content of our character.
Parents have the vital job to pass basic virtues on to their children and to inspire the practice of virtues in everyday life by bringing out the best in their children and themselves. Parents and youth of all ages are continually called upon to be all that we can be, to live a life of integrity by expressing the highest of universal virtues in everyday life.
We're called to do the right thing, to walk the spiritual path with practical feet.
ABOUT THE VIRTUES PROJECT
The Virtues Project was founded in 1991 by three concerned individuals who felt called to do something to counteract rising violence among youth and families: Linda Kavelin-Popov, a psychotherapist, organizational consultant and community healer; her husband Dr. Dan Popov, a clinical pediatric psychologist and senior computer scientist; and her brother, John Kavelin, an art director with Walt Disney Imagineering.
Researching the world's sacred texts, they discovered something simple and profound. At the heart of all spiritual traditions are virtues, described as the essence of the human spirit and the content of our character. A guide, The Family Virtues Guide, containing fifty-two of these universal virtues was published to help parents bring out the best in their children and in themselves. The Guide is available in the Unity Bookstore. More information about the Virtues Project: www.virtuesproject.com.
GOD'S GIFTS WITHIN SCHEDULE
January 6th through February 17th:
Basic Unity Belief: The One Presence & One Power:
There is only one Presence and One Power active in our lives and the universe-God, the good, omnipotent. God is love, and there is only God-there is nowhere where God is not. You can only know the God of your own experience.
JANUARY 6: HUMILITY
Affirmation: I focus on growing rather than impressing others. "...and before honor is humility." -Proverbs 15:33.
JANUARY 13: IDEALISM
I am unlimited. I believe in my dreams. "All things can be done for the one who believes." -Mark 9:23
JANUARY 20: PRAYERFULNESS
God speaks to me throughout the day, and I listen. "If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit." -Galatians 5:25
JANUARY 27: PURPOSEFULNESS
Together, God and I are creating a life in which I fulfill a divine purpose. "I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go."-Psalms 32:8
FEBRUARY 3: REVERENCE
I am thankful that a prayer is always a blessing. "Prayer...has great power."-James 5:16
FEBRUARY 10: SACREDNESS
I treat myself and others with sacredness, for we are all beloved creations of God. "Love your neighbor as yourself. Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law."-Romans 13:9-10
FEBRUARY 17: UNITY>br>
One in Spirit with others, I live and work in unity with them. "How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity."-Psalm 133:1
