BASIC BELIEFS We believe that there is only one Sovereign Power and Presence in the universe, God, and God is good.
God is individualized within each person. We refer to that as the Christlike nature within us.
The tools we use to access that Christlike nature are Prayer and Meditation. Prayer is talking to God, meditation is listening for that "still small voice".
The universe operates by the Law of Mind Action: thoughts held in mind produce after their kind. Our thoughts become reality in our lives.
The tools we use to monitor our thoughts are denial and affirmation. Denial is denying that there is a power within a situation to bring us harm. Affirmation is stating the Truth about the situation, knowing that God is everywhere present and omnipotent.
Using these tools we demonstrate our Christlike nature in our thoughts, words and deeds.
We are associated with Unity School of Christianity, a worldwide Christian organization with an extremely positive approach to life, seeking to accept the good in people and in all life. God is seen as having many attributes, but the most important are LOVE and FORGIVENESS. Unity stresses that God is not a physical man in the sky, for that limits our understanding. God is Spirit, everywhere present, the one and only Spirit above all, within all and through all, visible and invisible. (Ephesians 4:6) We deny the existence of any power or presence opposed to God. We see that there are evil appearances and suffering in the world, but attribute these to man's ignorance and erroneous use of God's law of life. Unity proclaims the divinity of Jesus, but goes further and assures that you too, are a child of God and therefore divine in nature. Jesus fully expressed His Divine potential and sought to show us how to express ours, as well. Unity explains that the mind (which includes the heart) is our connecting link with God. Consequently, much emphasis is placed on the effective power that thoughts, feelings, words, and actions have upon our lives. Prayer is not seen as a technique for changing God, but for expanding and transforming our minds/hearts, and thus changing us. It is our continuous privilege to "speak to God" and "listen to God". We seek to relate religion to daily needs, affirming that for every need there is God's perfect answer. Religion is the study of knowledge about God. We believe the objective is to KNOW God in such a way that God's Spirit and our spirit are one; that we evidence God's Spirit and Truth. We then bear the fruit of God's Spirit which is a rich and full life. Our main concern is not so much with a future life but with teaching people how to live fully in the present, seeing the potential for good in all things. We also believe in eternal life and view the present moment as part of eternal life. Unity is inter-denominational and welcomes in dignity and love, people of all races, colors, monotheistic religions, social backgrounds, and economic levels. "We recognize the truth, beauty and goodness found in all living religions yet find no peer for Jesus Christ, who opened to common people the way of God, through combined potency of His life teachings. We teach that Jesus Christ is alive today as an individualized Spiritual Presence, guiding humanity to its divinity. He is our Elder Brother, Way Shower, Lord and Teacher," Charles Fillmore, co-founder of Unity. Millions of people have been introduced to Unity through its periodicals: the Daily Word, Unity Magazine, and the former Wee Wisdom published at Unity World Headquarters in Unity Village, Missouri. Millions of others are familiar with Unity through its prayer ministry, known as Silent Unity, which has maintained a round-the-clock prayer for more than 100 years. Prayer help may be received by calling (816) 969-2000 or the toll free number (800 669-7729). Because of similarity in names, Unity has on occasion been confused with other organizations, Unity is not to be confused with the Unitarian Church nor the Unification Church. In summary, Unity emphasizes the Divine potential within every child of God and teaches that through a practical understanding and application of what Jesus taught, every person can realize and express their Divine potential for a happier, fuller and more successful life; life abundant and eternal, consistent with God's promise. |
