Founded in 1889, Unity is a non-denominational Christian religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. It is a positive, practical approach that affirms that we are all children of God and co-creators of our lives. Unity offers a practical philosophy for living and has no strict creed or dogma, but offers a comprehensive teaching to all who are seeking a deeper understanding of their spiritual nature. Unity teaches that God is good, and His will for us is good - happiness, health, harmony and abundance. As children of God, our purpose in life is to express our divine potential.
Unity's purpose is to help and teach all people to use and prove the eternal Truth taught by the Master, Jesus Christ. Unity is more than a church, more than a school. It is a spiritual movement for all individuals growing, seeking, unfolding and becoming what they are meant to be.
Unity is more interested in teaching one how to think than what to think. It always leaves you free to choose what has value for you.
Five Basic Principles of Unity
1. There is only one Presence and one Power
active in the universe and in my life,
God, the Good, All powerful.
2. The Christ Spirit, The Image of God,
indwells every person.
"Christ in you the hope of glory."
(Colossians 1:27)
3. Prayer and Meditation (listening) is our
daily connection with God's loving presence.
4. Through the power of thought, in God's
guiding light, we can transform our life.
5. Understanding these principles is not
enough-we must take them into action.
"Unity is a link in the great educational
movement inaugurated by Jesus Christ.
Our objective is to discern the truth in
Christianity and prove it. The truth we
teach is not new, neither do we claim
special revelations or discovery of new
religious principles. Our purpose is to help
mankind to use and prove the eternal Truth
taught by the Master (Jesus Christ)"
...Charles Fillmore
Unity's beliefs are Bible-based. The Bible states God's laws and gives us wisdom and guidance to help us in daily living. We believe that the stories, parables and allegories have a deeper spiritual (metaphysical) meaning. It is not just about a certain people at a certain time in history, but it is the story of humankind's spiritual journey back to the full awareness of oneness with God. All of the characters of the Bible represent some quality or aspect in each of us and they reveal lessons for us to learn so we can live more Christ-centered God-directed lives.
