Mill Stream

pastel on paper

26.5 x 19.5""

1985

private collection

This was one of dozens of paintings I made at a very secluded litte spot called Darden Mill Pond. Out in a rural area of Southampton County, in south eastern Virginia, the woods were covered in wysteria. The perfume of its bloom in the spring was intoxicating. The wysteria so owned the place, it created a great canopy overhead.

I was fascinated with the water, the pond itself, the run-off below the mill and the little ponds in the woods nearby. The sunlight and how it played with the water and the canopy of trees and wysteria was the subject of this series of paintings.
