Quenching your Thirst
Consider the possibility that synthesis thinking (creativity) is only
half of the normal energy cycle of human existence. In synthesis we connect
with the Source of energy. The other part of the process, what we call
logical or linear thinking, is simply grounding the energy. From this perspective,
creativity is simply a question of balance.
To look at these two parts of the process separately, let's look at
dreaming. Dreaming provides an isolated environment in which synthesis
functions are engaged while logical functions are suspended. This dream
environment provides a rich training ground for identifying the natural
ways we use synthesis (creativity) to solving problems in our waking world.
As we distinguish patterns in our dream state, we can recognize the same
patterns occurring in our waking state. Here are several recipes to get
you started.
Recipe: Priming the Pump
Notice that in your dreams, as in your waking state, you experience
a variety of senses; you see pictures, hear words and sounds, sense movement,
feelings and maybe even smells. In your waking state, you assimilate the
whole experience -- everything you see, hear, sense and feel -- and remember
only the essence of it. Likewise, we edit our dreams in the same way.
Note: The thought that's
present when we wake up is the clue to tapping the fountain of insight.
If we think of dreams as being like a water fountain, we can prime the
pump -- open the flow of thoughts and inspiration -- by taking the first
drop and writing it down.
Preparation: This is the
most critical part of the recipe. The first drops the thought that's present
-- on the tip of your tongue -- no matter how insignificant it seems. You
don't have to think about it, judge it, or figure it out -- it's the word,
thought feeling -- whatever sense you have of the dream that's right in
front of your nose! Don't worry about the next one, it's that one! Don't
think about it! Just write it down.
Only when you take this first drop, can the second drop appear. And
only when you take the second drop, can the third on appear. If you stay
only with the thought that's present, moment to moment -- the next, and
then the next and so on -- the flow begins.
As you write, other thoughts may occur to you. Write these down too.
Some may be possible interpretations, questions, stray thoughts, insights
-- write them all down.
Dreaming will help you see the way your creativity works. You don't
have to wait until you sleep and dream to access synthesis thinking. Look
to see similarities in how your dream senses relate to your waking use
of intuition and hunches. You can expand your access to creativity by noticing
every time an ah-haa! comes to you. Just write it down, or say 'thanks!'
As you work with your fountainhead of creativity, the old rusted pump
will become clean, free-flowing and well-maintained. You will be able to
count on it to deliver whatever you need, whenever you need it -- a fountainhead
attached to the universal source, flowing directly into your reservoir.
Whether you apply your insights to inventing the next technological
or scientific breakthroughs, making something run more smoothly at work,
healing your ills or finding the job that really lights you up -- is up
to you!
