Eric Butterworth's Discover the Power Within You is the kind of
book that appears once in a generation. The thoughts it presents about
the religion of Jesus Christ, in contrast to the popular religion about
Jesus Christ, are clear, direct, and convincing.
I first read the book at a time when I was disillusioned with the religion
of my childhood. I had read enough of the New Testament to realize that
Jesus was the most original religious thinker I had ever been exposed to.
Somehow it had never occurred to me that I could accept Jesus' teachings
directly, without accepting the spiritual compromises of the common religious
traditions.
Reverend Butterworth exposes those compromises and says it is time to
take Jesus at his word. Each of us is a religion of one person. We each
have our own relationship with God. If we rely on tradition and the spiritual
discernment of others to shape and limit that relationship, then we are
missing the fullness of that relationship, and we are limiting our faith
in God's ability to inspire and instruct each of us personally.
The following essays are my class homework from an eight-week course
I took at the Unity Church of Tulsa. The teacher was Reverend Nancy Neal,
and the material we were reading was Butterworht's Discover the Power Within
You.
If you haven't read this book, read it now and get excited about Jesus
Christ's discovery of the power within you.
These essays are not great literature, but there may very well be some
ideas in them that will resonate with you. I offer them to you freely,
share them with others if you like. If you have questions or comments about
what I have said, please send them to me. bjensen@oknet.com
A note from the author.
Before you begin reading this, I'd like to take a moment and explain
what inspired these essays. Recently I attended a class centered on Eric
Butterworth's book, "Discover the Power Within You". As a part of the class,
we were asked to write weekly response papers centered on our understanding
of the ideas presented in that book. During these assignments, I experienced
many developments and changes in my own consciousness.
Just the process of writing these brought many new and useful ideas
to light. Eventually I started sharing the papers I was writing with friends
and relatives. Not everyone will find these words new and stimulating,
but chances are there is something of value in them for you. Some of you
may even find some thoughts presented here, as threatening or upsetting
in some way. Even so, trust in your own mind's ability to accept what is
good and useful for you, reject what is not, and grow in the process. Nothing
has existence for you but what you share your love with, to the degree
that you give it presence and life.
