WHO WE ARE
We are a husband and wife writing, speaking, teaching team. C. Alan Anderson,
Ph.D. in philosophy; Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Religion at Curry
College, Milton, Massachusetts, and a co-founder and Board member of the Society for the Study of Metaphysical Religion
Deborah G. Whitehouse, Ed.D. in educational psychology; consultant,
educator, speaker, writer, and editor. Deb is a member and Alan a former member of the Executive Board of the International New
Thought Alliance, and Deb is the Editor of its quarterly, New
Thought. She is lyricist and composer of the process song "New Every Moment", which expresses a profound
grasp of the rapidly developing nature of everything.
OUR UNIQUENESS
We are new every moment in the creative process guided by God's love. This understanding is founded on the best of recent science, philosophy, and theology, as well as on some ancient views. You can learn about your "serial selfhood," your moment-by-moment co-creation with God, in our seminars, workshops, and writings, especially Chapter Six of New Thought: A Practical American Spirituality.
We believe that co-creation requires a plurality of freely choosing minds or experiences. To claim that all is God, somehow appearing as many, is--in effect--to deny the reality of co-creation. We recognize the psychological value of asserting that there is nothing but God, as an affirmation of (we agree) the perfect presence and adequacy of God in every situation, as well as the nonexistence of any cosmic evil power. Nevertheless, we consider the claim of God's allness to be an inadequate attempt to explain God's omnipresence, an attempt that produces insoluble ethical and metaphysical problems. Especially since Alfred North Whitehead explained how God and we can include (by what he called prehension) one another without being one another, it has been neither necessary nor desirable to suppose that God is all.
Our Process New Thought uses insights from Whiteheadian process philosophy, and emphasizes the essential nature of God as initiator, rather than responder in relation to any act of co-creation. For God to have the supreme self-consciousness, intelligence, and love required to be the inspirer and orchestrator of the universe is for God to be the ultimate, impartial person (without the limitations of human persons), rather than impersonal, abstract principle. Process New Thought has no need for a supposedly active Principle or Law, mechanically responding to thought. Interaction of innumerable minds--in various degrees acccepting and rejecting divine leadership--explains everything. Our Process New Thought provides the most sound foundation for New Thought practices such as affirmative prayer, visualization, and meditation, and adds the power of comprehensive philosophical understanding.
In our services and publications we combine our backgrounds in philosophy, psychology, business management, and personal development with the tradition of New Thought, a more-than-century-old spiritual, philosophical, practical living movement. It is the practice of the presence of God for practical purposes. New Thought includes such groups as Divine Science, Religious Science (Science of Mind), and Unity. Invaluable though these approaches are, they are largely based on traditional, idealistic, substance views of reality. We introduce current, developmental, process understandings of creativity that are coherent and practical in application to daily living.
