ABOUT NEW THOUGHT AND THE INTA

William James (1902): "America's only decidedly original contribution to the systematic philosophy of life."

Barbara Marx Hubbard (1994): "New Thought is now or will become in the next 30 to 50 years the most important single movement on earth."

The essence of New Thought: The power of God-oriented mind to change the circumstances of your life: health, wealth, relationships.

The means by which New Thought works: The practice of the presence of God for practical purposes: becoming conscious of God and accepting what God offers you. This may include reasoning, intuitive realization, affirmation, visualization.

Your relationship to God: God is in you and you and in God. You can become aware of this through regularly turning your mind to God, the universal mind.

History of New Thought: Drawing on many Western and Eastern sources, especially the healing tradition of Christianity, New Thought recognizes Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (1802-1866) as "Father of New Thought." Practicing what he believed was the healing method of Jesus, Quimby healed Warren Felt Evans, who wrote the first books (beginning in 1869) in what would become the New Thought movement, and Mary Baker Eddy (who later established Christian Science). Eddy's one-time associate Emma Curtis Hopkins taught founders of the New Thought organizations known as Divine Science, Unity, and Religious Science (Science of Mind). Originally known by such names as Mind Cure and Mental Science, the New Thought movement has had its present name since the 1890s. The International New Thought Alliance, successor to some earlier groupings, was formed in 1914 as an umbrella organization to further the work of the numerous New Thought groups and individuals.

Equality of Sexes and Races: From the beginning of the New Thought movement, women have played as prominent a role in New Thought leadership as have men. New Thought women have included founders and cofounders of denominations, writers, publishers, and many New Thought ministers and other leaders. Some of the most prominent New Thought leaders are African Americans.

Influence of New Thought: New Thought is one of the sources of present-day New Age outlooks, as well as much success literature and the positive thinking teachings of Norman Vincent Peale, Robert Schuller, and others. New Thought also contributed significantly to the beliefs of Alcoholics Anonymous (12 step programs), especially through the writings of popular New Thought minister Emmet Fox. The INTA has many individual and group members and geographical District organizations throughout the world.

Current activities of the INTA: In addition to many programs put on by local and regional Districts, each July the INTA presents an international Congress/Transformational Expo, featuring prominent speakers on many topics related to better practical living and to inspirational, organizational, historical, and philosophical concerns.
